Maureen Spencer, RN, BSN, M.Ed., CIC, FAPIC

Maureen Spencer is a highly experienced Infection Preventionist with over 40 years in the field and board certificated in infection control (CIC). Her contributions to infection prevention have been exceptional, earning her numerous accolades and recognition as an early pioneer in the field.
Maureen's innovative work in infection control was acknowledged when she received the APIC National Carole DeMille Award in 1990. In 2007, she was honored as one of the APIC Heroes of Infection Prevention for her significant role in establishing the MRSA and Staph aureus Elimination Program at New England Baptist Hospital, recognized as an Orthopedic Center of Excellence.
Distinguished Career Highlights: In 2012, Maureen was named in the prestigious “Who’s Who of Infection Prevention.” Her advanced practice and leadership in the field culminated in her designation as a Fellow of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (FAPIC) in 2017.

​Research and Publications: Maureen's commitment to advancing infection prevention is showcased through her prolific output of research abstracts and lectures presented at national and international conferences. She has authored over 55 peer-reviewed articles on healthcare-associated infections and co-authored two chapters in the 7th Edition of Brachman and Bennett's Hospital Infections (2023).

7 S Bundle Surgical Stewardship Program: Maureen has presented her impactful work, entitled “Establishing a Culture of Safety: A Bundled Approach for Prevention of Surgical Site Infections,” at various national and international conferences. The program, known as the “7 S Bundle,” reflects her innovative approach to surgical stewardship and is detailed on the website

Graves, BSN, RN, CNOR, is a well-known independent perioperative nurse consultant with a deep passion for surgical infection prevention and evidence-based best practices education and research. With more than 35 years of nursing experience, Peter has established himself as a leading authority in his field. He graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is a certified operating room nurse (CNOR). Peter has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored and co-authored chapters in prominent textbooks, and presented topics such as infection control, latex allergy, and patient and staff safety.
Peter has spoken at numerous conferences worldwide, including twenty-one times at the AORN Expo and Congress, ANCC Magnet Hospital conference, and American Nurses Association. As an active member of AORN, he has chaired and was a member of several national committees. Peter served seven years on the AORN Recommended Practices committee and was the lead author of several of the AORN guidelines. He was elected and served on the AORN national board of directors. Peter currently serves on the AORN Journal’s review panel. In addition to his professional work with AORN, Peter was the founding director and served as the Secretary / Treasurer of the CCI Research Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding perioperative nursing research. He was recently honored by receiving the Excellence in Volunteerism award from CCI in 2024 for his commitment to perioperative research.
Peter's dedication to advancing perioperative nursing through education, research, and advocacy has made a significant impact on the field, inspiring many colleagues and future nurses. Today, you can find Peter working on evidence-based educational programs, surgical infection prevention research, and serves as a KOL for several companies. He can also be found wearing scrubs inside an operating room helping assess the operating room’s current practices and procedures around infection control and prevention.
